There were three landscape items given us when they installed the grass--these yews, a pine tree that died and a deciduous tree for the parking strip.  The last two died but they did replace the tree.  We had to replace the pine tree ourselves.   They are really rangy, but do provide some plants on the north side of the house where we never go.

Julia Child Rose

Name: Rose
Variety: Rosa Julia Child Floribunda
Type: Shrub
Size: 3' x 3'
Light: Full sun
Flower Color: Butter Yellow
Fragrance: Light scent (yes one rose was fragrant--I have hope)
Bloom Time: Starting in late May

I love roses and this one is going to be of my favorites. Named for Julia Child, it is a wonderful butter yellow rose with a sweet fragrance. This is a 2006 AARS winner. I've been doing a lot of research about fragrance since my roses are not fragrant. Supposedly it will depend upon the maturity, temperature and humidity of the plant. They say roses are really fragrant in India because of the heat and humidity. Hopefully I'll get that opportunity here in cold Michigan.

Spirea In Bloom

Name: Spirea
Variety: Goldflame
Type: Deciduous bush
Flower Color: Dusty Rose
Height: 3' by 3 ' wide
Sun: Full Sun
Bloom Time: Late May Early June

The spirea are in bloom. They are a lovely fushia flower and each of the 9 shrubs is covered with flowers. I clipped the blossoms off the newest one so that it would concentrate on roots not flowers. So far in the garden something has been in bloom since the daffodils in April.

Weigela

Name: Weigela
Variety: Weigela Florida Java Red
Color: Pink with dark leaves
Type: Shrub
Height: 5' x 4'
Sun: Full sun
Bloom Time: Mid May

We purchased this for about $6. It was a small shrub and has taken awhile to grow. It's suppose to get taller than the spirea, but right now it's smaller. Still it flowers out beautifully in the spring time and has interesting foliage in the summer. It doesn't have a good fall show.

Summer Lilac

The flowers now have died. There was a wonderful show. However, the leaves are always a lovely cool addition to the summer garden. Wayne clipped all the dead blossoms so as to direct the growth to the roots and to better flower production next year.

Lilacs

Name: Lilac
Variety: Syringa Vulgar
Type: Shrub
Height: 8'
Sun: Full Sun
Flower Color: Deep Purple
Bloom Time: Late April
Location:  Front north of house, south of garage

I didn't keep the variety of lilacs other than the common vulgar. I'm not certain I ever had that information because these came from a local grower. They are doing so well. Last year the large bush had some sort of fungus so we pruned it out. Thanks to the internet I was able to save this beautiful bush. The smaller plant is also doing very well now that we've replanted it in better soil. I look for many many years of beautiful lilacs. These are a deep dark french purple and have a very light scent. I love seeing them very day as I drive home from work.
